Being paired with the Brewer’s is such a humbling and heartfelt experience. Being our only bereaved family, they give so much inspiration and hope to our Org. After being paired with them for over 14 years now, their stories, welcoming arms, and great hugs are a staple within EMS THON. We are unbelievably lucky to have been graced with the sweetest and most inspirational family. Troy’s parents, Butch and Lynn, constantly spend their time showing their love and affection, and they always tell us how grateful they are that they have us, when in reality, we are grateful for having them. We have also had the opportunity to build strong relationships with Michelle Brewer, Troy’s sister-in-law, and her three wonderful boys: LeLand, Logan, and Layton. All under the age of 8, having the three boys around is such a joy, and we have gotten the privilege to see them grow, while building relationships with them, over the years.
We have been paired with the Michael Woods Family since 2006, with Michael being diagnosed with cancer at a young age and ringing the bell at the age of 6 in 2007 to celebrate the end of treatment. Michael is now 18, having graduated high school this past spring, and has become a good friend to many of the members in our organization. Being paired with the Woods’ for so long has allowed our org to build a close relationship with the family. The Woods are a family of eight between the ages of 3 and 24! Every time we walk in their door, it is controlled chaos, with the kids sprinting around, the dogs barking and the older kids, and parents trying to keep a lid on everything. But this is what makes them so special. The parents, Lisa and Ryan, are always willing to open their doors to us no matter what is going on. We are truly a part of their family and they ours.
The Emily Schmidt family is our newest pairing, and we are going on our fourth year being paired with the family. Emily was five years old when she was diagnosed with cancer in 2015. In May of 2017, Emily rang the bell at Hershey Medical hospital to celebrate the end of her cancer treatment. Emily is in fourth grade and is one of the most outgoing girls you will ever meet! She loves getting to know members of our EMS org and will pull us into her games and home so quickly, always making sure we get an opportunity to get a tour of her room, meet her cats, and play with her dolls. Anna, Emily’s mom, is a hardworking supermom who is truly an inspiration to our entire org. Every time we leave after a family trip or after they come up for a THON event, our organization always talks about how they so quickly feel connected to the family. Anna always tells us how Emily never wants us to leave and wants us to be together all of the time because of how much fun Emily has with us.
Growing up is a beautiful thing. Let’s fight for it.
Join us in our commitment to turn childhood dreams into reality by supporting THON. This year, I am taking action by uniting with 16,500 student volunteers and over 25,000 alumni supporters in the fight against childhood cancer. Our year-long efforts culminate in a 46-hour, no-sitting, no-sleeping dance marathon each February to celebrate our survivors, remember those we’ve lost, and take a stand--all in hopes of one day dancing in celebration of a cure.
Throughout the year, I will be fundraising to benefit THON in an effort to provide outstanding financial and emotional support and spread THON’s mission world-wide. It is my hope that one day, every child will have the opportunity to live out their dreams.
I THON ... For The Kids™.
I THON ... so every child's dreams can come true.
I THON ... so our angels' stories live on.
Since 1977, THON has raised over $180 million for Four Diamonds at Penn State Children’s Hospital, providing comprehensive care for 4,000 families and fund critical research to take our fight beyond central Pennsylvania and spread hope around the world. We work year-round to provide both financial and emotional support for our families, ensuring that they never have to face cancer alone.
I truly appreciate any support you provide, either by making a donation or by sharing my page on social media to spread THON’s mission.
