Jaime's THON Story
If you are unfamiliar with THON, watch the video below that recaps last year's THON!
Every kid deserves to be a kid. Our fight is making that happen. Please explore my page to learn about THON, the largest student-run philanthropy in the world, raising money for the Four Diamonds Fund at Penn State Hershey Medical Center. Four Diamonds ensures that no family facing childhood cancer sees a medical bill.
Our year-long efforts culminate in a 46-hour, no-sitting, no-sleeping dance marathon each February to celebrate our survivors, remember those we’ve lost, and take a stand--all in hopes of one day dancing in celebration of a cure.
Below are some of my best THON Memories pictured.
For THON 2019 (my first THON as a Penn State student) I was a member of the Dancer Relations committee of Madeline Anderson! Dancer Relations is a group of students that volunteer for internal THON and are paired with the dancers who stand 46 hours to be their "cheerleader". We provide a lot of physical and emotional support for the dancers throughout the weekend and help them keep morale high! Pictured above is my entire committee the first time we all met!
Also for THON 2019, I rushed Zeta Tau Alpha, and helped fundraise on their behalf. My sorority is paired with Alpha Tau Omega, and we have been fighting together for a cure over the last 31 years. Additionally, "Zetaus" (as we like to call ourselves), are proud to have been the top Greek fundraiser for THON for the last 25 years!
Each year, organizations that participate in THON have a theme for their letters and tee shirts of the weekend. In 2019 our theme was music, which was chosen by our (now) angel THON child, Joyce. Joyce gained her angel wings right before THON 2020, and is the reason Zetaus thons.
Pictured above were the two dancers I was paired with in 2019: Dennis (left) and Jared (right). They were both brothers of Delta Upsilon, and stood all 46 hours strong!
For THON 2020 I returned to be a Dancer Relations Committee member. This year, my captain's name was Maggie Straub! I was paired with dancers in Pro Golf Management and still keep in touch with them- after spending 30+ hours with the dancers in one weekend, you get to know them pretty well!
Pictured above is my friend (and sorority sister) Kaitlyn and I at Zetaus's "Families Meet the Families" THON Gala.
The THON Gala is a fundraiser unique to my sorority, and is an event where the families we are paired with have the chance to meet our parents. At the event, attendees enjoy food, participate in numerous raffles, auctions, and hear speeches from our organization's dancers, chairs, and the THON Executive Committee.
For THON 2020, I was paired with Pro Golf Management / Club Equestrian. My dancers were Chris North (left) and Mike Emhof (right). They stood strong all 46 hours and their organization placed in the top 5 overall organizations for THON that year for the first time! This picture was taken right before the final 4 hours of THON began.
I was too busy this weekend to get pictures with my sorority, but Zetaus's theme for THON 2020 was Phineas and Ferb!
For THON 2021, I decided to gear my efforts towards fundraising for my sorority, and served as the Donor Drive Chairman. I helped market our fundraising efforts and drive donations towards Zetaus's fundraising goal.
In the light of the Pandemic, THON 2021 was still a weekend to remember. Despite it being virtual, my organization came together to find a way for our dancers to gather and stand all 46 hours together (while still following CDC guidelines). Our theme was Scooby Doo! I was fortunate enough to get to spend a few hours supporting the dancers this weekend in-person.
Our THON 2021 chairs went above and beyond in planning a weekend themselves at the Graduate hotel in downtown state college. Not even that, but they lead also ZTA and ATO to reach their fundraising record of $322,346.80.
Zeta Tau Alpha and Alpha Tau Omega Raised $322,346.80 of the $10,638,078.62 THON 2021 Total, For The Kids, and it was because of YOUR support!
Throughout the year, I will be fundraising to benefit THON in an effort to provide outstanding financial and emotional support and spread THON’s mission world-wide.
Since 1977, THON has raised over $157 million for Four Diamonds at Penn State Children’s Hospital, providing comprehensive care for 4,000 families and fund critical research to take our fight beyond central Pennsylvania and spread hope around the world. We work year-round to provide both financial and emotional support for our families, ensuring that they never have to face cancer alone.
For THON 2022, I will be fundraising on behalf of my sorority, ZETA TAU ALPHA, and will also be a chairman helping organize and facilitate the families meet the families THON Gala. Please consider making a donation to my favorite cause!
Thank you for your support.
