When you decide to support THON™, you become a partner in the ongoing fight against childhood cancer. As part of my organization benefitting THON, I am working alongside 16,500 student volunteers and over 25,000 alumni to support more than 4,000 families at Penn State Children’s Hospital to one day end the fight against childhood cancer. Since THON’s beginning in 1973, we have raised over $168 million dollars, For The Kids™!
This is my fourth and final year involved in THON as a student and there are countless reasons why I THON. With my position this year as an FR captain I have meet a lot of families and heard all about their stories. Each one is so inspirational and unbelievable in how strong they all are.
One of the biggest reasons I THON is for every one in my family who has been affected by cancer: my grandfather/grandmother, my aunt/uncles, and most of all my brother, Jack. Jack was a 2017 Penn State Graduate who majored in Geoscience. He was diagnosed with Glioblastoma Multiforme (GBM), which is an extremely rare form of brain cancer for someone so young. Watching Jack go through multiple rounds of chemotherapy, radiation, and surgeries was very hard to watch and bear. Watching him go from a healthy young man poised to do such amazing things with his new degree to being bound to a hospital for months on end was unbearable to watch.
No matter how bad things got Jack never lost his sprirt and was always cracking jokes. He was always more concerned with how everyone around him was doing rather than himself. Jack passed away on June 4, 2018. I was determined to honor him in every way I could, so last year I indepenetly danced in his honor, raising a total of $11,200. This year I am on the Family Relations committee and get to help families who also have their Angels watching over them. I joined THON so no family has to experience what my family did and so no parents, siblings, aunts, unlces, or grandparents every have to hear the words "your child has cancer".
Your contribution will fund innovative research that will not only enhance treatment for children in Pennsylvania but is also giving hope to childhood cancer patients worldwide! Together, with every student, volunteer, alumnus, donor, and supporter, we can spread awareness of THON’s mission across the country and throughout the world. With your support of THON, together, we will make a difference in the lives of children nationwide. Join us in the fight, For The Kids.
