Make an impact in the life of a child today

When you decide to support THON™, you become a partner in the ongoing fight against childhood cancer. Your contribution will fund innovative research that will not only enhance treatment for children in Pennsylvania but is also giving hope to childhood cancer patients worldwide! As part of my organization benefitting THON, I am working alongside 16,500 student volunteers and over 25,000 alumni to support more than 4,000 families at Penn State Children’s Hospital to one day end the fight against childhood cancer.  Since THON’s beginning in 1973, we have raised over $168 million dollars, For The Kids™!

My name is Liza George, and I am a Technology Captain for THON 2020! The mission of The Technology Committee is to assist all THON Organizations and Committees by providing software solutions and technical support to help further THON’s mission of conquering childhood cancer. Our software provides vital functionality that enables THON to spread our mission, raise funds, and host events at a large scale. In my current role, I manage and develop the THON Information Network (THINK), THON's internal website used by over 16,000 volunteers.

More about THON:

THON is a student-run philanthropy committed to enhancing the lives of children and families impacted by childhood cancer. THON’s mission is to provide emotional and financial support, spread awareness, and ensure funding for critical research- all in pursuit of a cure. Our year-long efforts culminate in a 46-hour, no-sitting, no-sleeping dance marathon each February to celebrate our survivors, remember those we’ve lost, and take a stand- all in hopes of one day dancing in celebration of a cure. Since 1973, THON has raised millions of dollars for Four Diamonds at Penn State Children’s Hospital, providing comprehensive care for 4,000 families and fund critical research to take our fight beyond central Pennsylvania and spread hope around the world. We work year-round to provide both financial and emotional support for our families, ensuring that they never have to face cancer alone.

My THON Journey:

Before attending Penn State, I was involved in various cancer-awareness events including Relay for Life and my high school's Mini-THON. Through both of those experiences, I knew I wanted to be involved with THON at Penn State the second I accepted my offer to the college. During my freshman year, I joined THON 2017 as a Hospitality Committee Member where I helped serve all food and beverage donations at THON events to fuel THON’s dancers, families, and volunteers. I couldn't believe how much the THON Community impacted me that year. I had no words the first time I stepped onto the floor during THON Weekend. Looking around the BJC and seeing thousands of volunteers, organizations, and families come together for an important cause was breathtaking.

I was a Hospitality Committee Member again during my sophomore year where I led the fundraising efforts for my committee. My experience was more memorable that year because I had the opportunity to donate my hair during THON Weekend. Knowing that my donation could potentially bring joy or happiness to a child made the experience both humbling and rewarding.

I left THON 2018 knowing I wanted to make a greater impact on the THON Community which is what led me to apply to be a Technology Captain. I was a THINK developer for THON 2019 which gave me the opportunity to create tools to improve THON's functionality online. This year, I am the project manager for the same website which has been an incredibly rewarding experience; I enjoy working with other THON Committees and making an impact using various technologies.

THON has truly impacted me in ways I can’t describe. It’s remarkable seeing such a diverse group of people come together to create the largest student-run philanthropy in the world. I’ve had the opportunity to meet amazing volunteers and the Four Diamonds families we support. Hearing their stories is inspiring and a constant reminder of why we THON. I’m extremely passionate about THON’s mission and couldn't be more proud to be part of such an incredible organization.
