Make a difference in the life of a child

Help save the lives of children battling cancer by supporting THONTM. Our organization, Public Relations Student Society of America, is taking action by uniting with 16,500 student volunteers to raise funds and awareness in the fight against childhood cancer. Since 1977, THONTM has raised over $190 million for Four Diamonds at Penn State Health Children's Hospital. Throughout our partnership, we have ensured that over 4,000 families have not seen a single medical bill. In addition, the local research that is being done is making a global impact so that one day, we will find a cure. Each February, THON's yearlong efforts and support for the families culminate in a 46-hour, no-sitting, no-sleeping dance marathon.
By supporting THON™, you will be joining a community committed to conquering childhood cancer.

Since 2010, the Public Relations Student Society of America has been honored to know our incredible paired THON family - The Whiteheads. At just five years old, Emily Whitehead was diagnosed with acute leukemia. Following treatments at Penn State's Hershey Medical Center, Emily's cancer relapsed in 2011 before she was able to receive a bone marrow transplant. With limited options left, Emily's doctors suggested that the Whiteheads go home and place Emily in hospice care, but they were not ready to give up.

Emily's parents, Tom and Kari searched endlessly for other options and found a highly experimental T-cell treatment. They decided to try it, and when Emily woke up following the treatment she was CANCER FREE! In May 2012, Emily became the first person in the world to have their immune system trained to fight cancer!

Since then, Emily has been living a happy and healthy life. Due to the success of her treatment, the Whiteheads have gained immense notoriety and were featured in outlets such as The New York Times, Forbes, HBO! They even recently published their own book! Emily and her family have traveled all over the world to share their story, and they have met tons of celebs! The Whiteheads have also established the Emily Whitehead Foundation to fund more research and spread awareness along with helping other families in similar positions that they were once in!
PRSSA is so proud to know the Whiteheads, and each year we continue to dance in celebration of a cure!

Public Relations Student Society of America is a Penn State organization that participates in THON™, in addition to our organization's primary purpose. Throughout the year, Organizations contribute to the efforts of thousands of Penn State students across all campuses by facilitating fundraisers, as well as providing emotional support to Four Diamonds Families.
