Every school day, 43 children are diagnosed with cancer. As aspiring educators, we THON so that our future students can focus on homework and recess, not cancer. We THON so our students can grow up to be doctors, engineers, or maybe even teachers like us. Growing up is a beautiful thing, and we are here to fight for it.
Our organization, SPSEA is taking action by uniting with 16,500 other student volunteers and over 25,000 alumni supporters in the fight against childhood cancer. Our year-long efforts culminate in a 46-hour, no-sitting, no-sleeping dance marathon each February to celebrate the survivors, remember the angels, and encourage the fighters.
Our organization is paired with two loving and unique families, the Smiths and the Guzmans. Morgan Smith is an energetic 6 year old who loves playing outside or going to Hersheypark with her little brother, Weston, and baby sister, Juliana. When she was just 2 months old, she was diagnosed with neuroblastoma which spread to cause a tumor in her stomach. Thanks to the support of her loving parents and treatment at Penn State Hershey Children’s Hospital, Morgan now has no evidence of disease. Morgan will start be starting kindergarten this year and says she wants to be a cheerleader when she grows up.
Carmen Guzman is a passionate 17 year old who works hard figure skating and volunteering with her high school’s Mini-THON. When Carmen was 6, she was diagnosed with acute lymphoblastic leukemia. After years of treatment and check ups at Penn State Hershey Children’s Hospital, Carmen was officially deemed cancer free in 2017. As a pediatric cancer survivor, Carmen was recently accepted into Penn State and will be entering the Penn State College of Nurisng in the Fall. Congratualtions Carmen, PSU '24!
